Obituary of Sheldon Joseph Thomas

Sheldon Joseph Thomas Port Morien It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our father, Sheldon Thomas, 69, on November 12, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Glace Bay on August 29, 1947, he was the son of the late Vincent and Gertrude (Cochrane) Thomas. Sheldon began his work career with Maritime Builders and later, worked as an electrician with Lynk Electric and then at the Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant until it closed in 1985. The sea was calling and he returned to his love of fishing. He fished out of Port Morien until recently. He was also member of the IBEW. Sheldon played in the Dominion Old Timers hockey league where he made lasting friendships. He enjoyed watching hockey and when his children were young, in the wintertime, he built an outdoor rink in the back yard for the neighborhood to enjoy. He will be remembered for his love of music, quick whit, his easygoing personality and his heart of gold. Sheldon will be sadly missed by his son, Chris and wife, Amy (White), the newest joy of his life, granddaughter, Nunah May, Abu Dhabi; daughter, Lynette and husband, John (MacKillop), Iqaluit; partner, Peggy Gorai, Halifax; mother of his children, Eleanor Thomas, Port Caledonia. Also left to mourn are brothers, Wayne (Jeannie), Douglas (Doreen), Calvin (Kay), Darrell (Wendy); sisters, Marlene (Eric) Campbell, Velma (Wayne) Burke; along with many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gerald; and his four legged companion ‘Caper’. As per Sheldon’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A funeral mass of celebration will take place on Monday, November 21, 2016 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Port Morien with Father Leo Boone officiating. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery with a reception to be held at Port Morien Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sheldon’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
