Obituary of Jerry "Potsy" Somerton, Glace Bay

Gerald Alexander “ Jerry” “Potsy” Somerton Jr. Glace Bay It is with profound sadness and disbelief that we announce the passing of Gerald "Jerry" Alexander Somerton Jr. on Monday, April 17th, 2017 at the age of 54 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in New Waterford, Jerry is survived by his loving daughter, Victoria Somerton, father, Gerald Somerton Sr., step-mother Beverley (Strong) Somerton, sister, Kim Somerton-Clarke, brother, Terry Somerton (Shauna Matheson) and brother, Derek Somerton. Jerry is also survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Jerry was predeceased by his mother, Joan (Rigby) Somerton (1988), nephew, Mathew Somerton (2014), grandparents, Olive and Harold Somerton, Grace and Billy Rigby as well as Bernie Cummings. Jerry worked most of his life at his father's garage, Gerald's Ultramar, Glace Bay where he touched many people’s lives. He was an amazing athlete. He loved to play hockey, baseball and darts. Any sport that he played he was a natural. He was known for many years as the great number “9”. Jerry was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan. Jerry, who was also known as “Potsy” too many people, was happy go lucky, outgoing and loved everyone who was blessed to have met him. His family and friends adored him and his great sense of humour- along with his dancing skills and his favorite cowboy hat. His only daughter, Victoria, who was his pride and joy, always loved to be with her dad. Jerry loved his father, Gerald Sr., not only as a dad but as a best friend. His two brothers and sister looked up to him their whole lives. Jerry also loved animals, especially Brandi, whom he dog sat on numerous occasions. He also took in stray cats every other day. There are no words to describe how much Jerry will be missed by his family, friends and community. He had a special place in so many hearts. Visitation will be held this Friday from 2-4, 7- 9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau is Saturday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport followed by a reception in the church hall. Cremation to follow with interment in the parish cemetery at a later date.
