Obituary of Joseph Calvin "JoJo" MacLeod, Port Caledonia

Joseph Calvin MacLeod “JoJo”
Port Caledonia

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother and uncle, Joseph MacLeod, 80, of Port Caledonia, on Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 at the Glace Bay General Hospital with his loving family at his side. Born in Glace Bay, Joe was the eldest son of the late Josie and Peggy (Green) MacLeod.

Joe was a lifelong lobster fisherman. His passion for the sea began when he purchased his first “dory” at the age of 15, fishing from Sike’s shore to Schooner Pond and Port Morien over his 50 year career. Not only did Joe captain a vessel for 50 years, but he also sailed with “The Captain” for many years. During the off-season, Joe also worked as a carpenter on various local work sites. It was through his work that he developed many lifelong relationships.

Joe leaves behind to mourn, his sisters, Catherine (Charlie) Johnston, Scarborough, Ont., Irma Jones, Antigonish, and brother, Kerry (Annie) MacLeod, Port Caledonia; nieces and nephews, Cheryl (Gino) Colangelo, Christine (John) Pember, Loreen (Rob) Allen, Marla (Keith) Barton, Todd (Stephanie) Jones, Brian (Amy) Jones, Conor (Emily) MacLeod, and Brett MacLeod. He is also survived by many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Calvin Jones, Antigonish.

A special thank-you to the staff of 3 South at the Glace Bay General Hospital, Dr. Ley, the nursing staff of Victoria Haven, VON, and Home Care; as well as to the staff of Joe’s favorite restaurant Colette’s, Glace Bay, for providing him with many meals.

As per Joe’s wishes, there will be no visitation or church service. Interment will take place at St. Luke’s United  Cemetery in Donkin on Saturday, August 5th at 10 A.M. with Rev. Carol Gillard officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the IWK Children’s Hospital or a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca

The Fisherman’s Prayer

God grant that I may live to fish
until my dying day,

and when my Final Cast is made
I most humbly pray,

when in the Lord's landing net I
am peacefully asleep,

that in His Mercy, I may be judged "As
Good Enough To Keep".
