Obituary of Duncan G. 'Jerry' Gardiner, Grand Mira South/ N.W.

With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Jerry on Feb. 2, 2018 with his loving wife and daughter, Kim, by his side.

Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jerry was born in New Waterford Sept. 2, 1941 to the late Duncan and Rita (O’Quinn) Gardiner.

Jerry attended Scottish concerts for about 30 years and later, started attending Bluegrass festivals. His highlight was that his two granddaughters, Caitlyn and Jessica, came with him and his wife, Jean, for several years. He spent 14 years in Florida, which he treasured; he didn’t like the cold. Jerry loved to talk to people and his first question was “where you from?” Jerry was self employed most of his life.

His declining health kept him home a lot but he always said Mira was God’s country. His Jack Russell, Katie, was always ready to travel with him.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Jean, in their 55th year of marriage; daughter, Kim (Michael) Gillis, New Waterford; grandsons, Christopher Gardiner, Fort McMurray, Jonathan Gillis (Ashley), Reserve; granddaughters, Caitlyn Gardiner, Fort McMurray, Sarah Gillis, Halifax, Jessica Gillis, New Waterford; brothers, Donnie, River Ryan, Fred (Val), England, Michael (Louise), Glace Bay, Myles (Denise), Gardiner Mines; sisters, Brenda, Toronto, Marie, Vancouver; sister-in-law, Anne Cairney, Toronto; brother-in-law, Bob Green (Debbie), MacTier, Ont., great-granddaughter, Abbie Gillis as well as nephew/grandson, Brendon, Alberta and several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

Besides his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Cheryl Gardiner, beloved grandson, Jordan Gillis and sister-in-law, Sheron Gardiner.

In keeping with Jerry’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.  A funeral mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at 1 pm. in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Grand Mira South, with Father Paul MacGillivray officiating. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall. Burial will be in St. Margaret’s Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dementia/Alzheimer’s Society, An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, or St. Margaret’s Cemetery, Mira. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
