It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ruth Ellen Poirier (Barton). She died peacefully on March 13, 2023 surrounded by family at Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born on July 29, 1947 in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Ruth was the youngest daughter of nine brothers and sisters.
She is predeceased by her parents, Cleophas (Clo) and John Barton of New Waterford; siblings, Blair and Valerite Joan, John (Corky) Barton and Rita, Alfred Barton, Ray Barton and Rosie, Connie Webster and Jim Dickinson, Thomas Barton and Cecil Barton.
She is survived by her doting and loving husband of 58 years, Fred Poirier of New Victoria, Cape Breton. Ruth was mother to Laura Poirier and Christine Bourdeau (deceased); grandmother to Kyle and Ryan; great-grandmother to Yuric, Ira, Shiloh and Finnegan Bourdeau. Loved dearly by her extended family, Louise and Harold Dawe, Walter and Rita Poirier (deceased), Dave (deceased) and Anita Poirier, Linda Poirier (deceased), Eileen and Harry (deceased) Montgomery, Hector and Rodena Poirier, Kathleen Barton (sister-in-law) and the endless lineage of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ruth’s love for her family was immense and her passion for cooking and entertaining has left a permanent mark on all the lives that had the opportunity to spend time in her company.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A celebration of her life will be held in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, at a later date.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the palliative care team at the Aberdeen Hospital and Ruth’s medical support of Dr. Lum and Dr. Straub.
