Obituary of Arnold Murphy, Reserve Mines

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and husband, Arnold Leonard Murphy, age 80 on Monday, November 19th, 2018 at home with his wife Nan of 57 years by his side.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Tom and Laura (McInnis) Murphy.

Arnold was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines. He worked for many years for the Glace Bay Central Credit Union before joining the Employment Insurance Commission until his retirement in 1987.

Arnold was a kind, warm gentleman who was loved by everyone who had the honour of making his acquaintance. He cherished time spent with his family and friends. His favourite pastimes were swimming, picnics at Grove’s Point and Saturday Tarabish with great friends, Winston and Patricia Caines. Arnold had a great sense of humour and continued to make us smile right up to the end.

Arnold is survived by the love of his life, Nan (Finlayson) Murphy, his daughter, Karen Everett and grandchildren, Rachael and Adrian. Also surviving are his brothers, Tommy (Minette), Jerry (Mora), Stewart (Marie), his sister, Norma and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Besides his parents, Arnold was predeceased by his son in law, Stephen Everett, brothers in law, Gord Byrnes, Melvin and his wife Pearl, Charlie, sister in law and husband, Alice and Mike Almond, father and mother in law, Walter and Veronica Finlayson.

The family would like to thank, Dr. Spencer, palliative care doctors, nurses and the VON for the wonderful compassionate care they gave to Arnold. We can never thank you enough.

At Arnold’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
