Raymond "Ray" Michael Kavanaugh passed away peacefully on August 28th, 2020 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 70. Apart from one initial year teaching in Dartmouth, Ray spent his teaching career at Breton Education Centre in New Waterford, where he also served as the Head of the Social Studies Department. He thoroughly loved being a teacher and it was common to hear his former students say “Ray K. was the best teacher I ever had.” Ray’s love for teaching was very evident because he often said, “I never worked a day in my life.” His love of history and his great ability to write were very evident when he and the late Martin Schwartz co-wrote the book titled “Cape Breton Island A Select View”, a compulsory read for all Coal Bowl participants. Additionally, for years he served his fellow teachers through his position as President of the Cape Breton District Local of the NSTU and through terms of office on the NSTU Provincial Executive and the NSTU Group Insurance Trustees. A natural leader, like his father, Ray became involved in municipal politics, serving as New Waterford’s last Mayor and, after amalgamation, as a Councillor for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. His knowledge, skills, and commitment to working in the best interests of Cape Breton and its citizens also saw him serve as Chair of the Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority, Chair of Destination Cape Breton and a board member on the Sydney Airport Authority. After retiring he also had his own private consulting company, KAVO Consulting. Ray was never happier than when he was socializing with family and friends. A true host, Ray loved having laughs, entertaining guests, and telling stories. From hosting Sunday Brunch, to enjoying Sunday Funday at his son Jason’s, Ray loved being around people. His greatest pleasure was when his sons Jamie, Jordan, Justin, and their families, came home to spend time with Granny and Papa. He never had a bigger smile than when he was enjoying his grandchildren Callen, Finn, Wilton Quinn, Lincoln, and Erica. Ray’s life was made complete by his wife of 48 years, Carmie. Best friends, and a couple since junior high school, they were truly a match made in heaven. Ray is survived by his wife Carmie (Campbell) and his four sons Jamie (Michelle), Jason, Jordan (Jennifer) and Justin (Holly) and their beautiful grandchildren Callen, Finn, Wilton Quinn, Lincoln and Erica. His brothers Jim (Mary) Kavanaugh, Tom (Marlene) Kavanaugh, and sisters Marie Kavanaugh, Loveina (Frank) Kennedy and Pauline (Frank) Ducharme. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Heather Kavanaugh, Diane (Brian) Spencer, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his parents Jim and Marie Kavanaugh, his sisters Inez and Norma, and his brother Bobby, as well as his mother and father in law, Alex and Margaret Campbell, and nephew Quinn Kavanaugh. Cremation has taken place .Visitation will be held from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday, September 1st at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Due to COVID - 19, the McGillivray staff will be directing attendees through the process, face masks and social distancing are required. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Raed Azer, Dr. Glen Gracie, Dr. Kian Khodadad, the VON, Dr. Saneea Abboud, Dr. John Ritter and the palliative care staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County or the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
