Obituary of Margaret Genevieve (Gen) Petrie, New Waterford

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Margaret Genevieve (Gen) Petrie, at the age of 99 on January 28, 2025 at Harbourstone Nursing Home.

Gen was born in New Waterford on August 18, 1925, married Alex (Gents) Petrie, in 1947, and spent her entire life there raising six children, all of whom survive her: Frank (Florrie), Carol Vokey, Billy (Shelly), Glen (Mel), Jennifer Baker (Russell) and Paula MacDonald (Ken). She was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Wilmot) MacAulay.

Gen is also survived by grandchildren, Paul, Karen, David, Stephen, Mark, Andrew, Michelle and Ryan; by great-grandchildren, Max, Jackson, Adison, Abbie, Bria, Dylan and Isaac; and by sisters, Shirley and Margie.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Alex, who who passed in 2013, and son, John Joseph (in infancy); brothers, Donnie, Gordon, Billy and Alistair; half-brothers, Neil and Hughie; and sisters, Mary, Annie and Dorothy.

With a positive attitude and energy that kept her going into ripe old age, Gen enjoyed a full and active life. She loved her husband, her children, her home, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved life. When her children had grown, she finally had time to herself and joined the Lingan Golf Club, where she enjoyed playing with her husband, and a group of female friends with whom she shared many laughs and good times. In winter, they skied cross-country together. At the age of 65, Gen took up painting, unleashing a talent no one knew she had, and many of her paintings are now family heirlooms. She loved big band music and an annual highlight for her was dancing at a New Year’s Eve ball with her husband and their many friends, sadly now all gone. We hope she is dancing now with Dad.

We are grateful to have had such a great mother who stayed with us in good health for so long. She said soon before passing, “I’ve had a good life.”

We wish to express our thanks to staff at Harbourstone, the kind and hardworking women of New Waterford Homecare, and Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date with burial in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.

Any donations in her memory can be made to Palliative Care or Loch End Cemetery. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
