I did not know David. My cousin, the late Donnie MacNeil of Reserve Mines, told me they knew each other very well. If I remember correctly they pursued their education at Saint Francis University. Later in life, they taught at Thompson Elementary School in Reserve Mines. Both excelled in their careers. Unfortunately, upon retirement their paths somewhat diverged. I met David in 2013 when Donnie became ill, he was a frequent visitor to the hospital and later at home. David gave him some much comfort and inner strength ,this epitomize the man he was.

Remember Mr. Nearing, my grade 7 science teacher at MacLennan Junior High, with fondness. A sharp, witty and kind man with a passion for teaching and challenging each and every student. Later in life I would meet him in the community with my husband’s family and witnessed that he was exactly like he was outside the classroom: a kind and thoughtful neighbour and devoted member of the community.

Most sincere condolences to Paula and all family and friends of David. His contribution through his teaching, his community work and within the religious community has been much appreciated. David & Paula were long-time members of a Book Club where he made meaningful contributions; he studied in the Ministry program in which my late husband was involved; and he was a favourite teacher of my son. He and three other students (including my brother) shared accommodation while students at S. FX. All in all, his presence was very much valued, his insights and humour a welcome addition to our gatherings. Paula and David were a tight unit, complementing one another beautifully. Both will be remembered in my prayers.

David was always a part of our family. He was always there, at every family get together, Sunday afternoon, or a drop in on some random day. He was always ready for a joke regardless of who was in on it. When I brought my wife to Cape Breton for the first time, David came over to the house and introduced himself to Lea Ellen as Art Vestibule. That was probably the best way to figure out what you were going to get from David. When I was 6 or 7 years old, David gave a single $5 bill to me, my sister Therese, and my cousin Heather. He then said that we could only spend it if we could divide it evenly between the three of us. We were so happy until figured out about that last penny. He would joke with us all the time.
David and Paula gave me a card for my Confirmation, and there was a verse from the Bible written in it. He asked me if I understood what it meant, and to this day I still have no idea. I tried to explain what I thought it meant, but was pretty sure I wasn't getting it at all. All I know is that it was as thoughtful and sincere a message that I could have hoped for, and I wish I had that card now so that I could take another crack at understanding it.
I wish I could express how much David meant to me and how much I will miss him. I sure everyone who knew David feels the same. He was one of a kind. Truly a one of one.

The first summer that I went to Cape Breton with my now husband, David was one of the first people I met. He embodied the quintessential Cape Bretoner- instantly friendly, welcoming, and spoke to me as if he had known me for years. From the first time I met him, he welcomed me into the fold- immediately cracking jokes about my husband (his godson) and my future parents in-law (Mary Ann and Ray). Over the years, I looked forward to our annual visits to Cape Breton which always included visits with David and Paula. David would always have everyone laughing. At the same time, he also liked to discuss very seriously the novels I was reading with my classes and talk about education and his perspectives and personal philosophies about teaching and the classroom. He will be greatly missed, but so fondly remembered. Paula, I am so sorry for your loss- I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

My heart felt Condolences to you, Paula and your family on hearing of the passing of David. I will always remember David's wit . One thing that stands out is the time you sent us to go get something at Sobeys on a Saturday evening for something you were baking. As we were going to go threw the sliding doors, David suggested we go in with a funny wave at the monitor as you walk into the store. So the doors opened and we went in and waving like fools. We were laughing and just being silly. Then from the shadows where the carts were, we heard a loud laugh. lol known to us, there was an employee there. We turned and said hi to the employee and laughed and went into the store. This was David. He was a great friend and we had many interesting chats. He will be missed. Linda Campbell

Hi Paula. Marion, Family & Friends,
We are saddened by the loss of a wonderful man, companion, friend, and special relative who will be greatly missed. Unfortunately, time restraints and lack of travel options will prevent us from joining you this evening and at the Mass tomorrow afternoon.
David's consideration for others, his listening ability, wise advice, and a sense of humour shall always live in our hearts and minds. He had a familiar look on his face when either approving or disagreeing, which he and I often agreed was the "infamous Nearing look.' We will love David forever as he awaits our arrival in God's Eternal Kingdom, which we truly believe exists.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

A true teacher on every respect - I struggled in Scince and he made it fun, engaging, and memorable. I still to this day remember a lot of his lessons. He was very kind and easily related to students. I often think of him when I am teaching my own classes and try to measure up to hos greatness and how he interacted with students. For example, when a classmate asked if they could ask him a question, he said "if it is a comoir then blue. If it is a number, it is _." I also remember him telling us of his grand plans for retirement, that he will drive a motorcycle.
He will always hold a special place in my heart and spirit of being a teacher - exuding calm, patience, humour and respect. I wish I was there - my heart is with you all.

My sincere sympathy to Paula, all of David’s family and friends. David was a brilliant kind man who I had the pleasure to work with, for over ten years with, at MacLennan Junior High. David also taught my son; and was my son‘s favourite teacher during his junior high years. He made such a positive impact on so many students lives. David took the time and showed up at my son‘s Grade 12 graduation with Redmond MacDougall. These two guys certainly made a difference in students lives. They also made a huge difference in the lives of the staff they worked with. David will forever hold a place in my heart and in my son Mathew‘s heart. Thank you, David, for letting students know how important they are, letting them know their potential, and always letting them know hard work pays off. It has been a pleasure to know you in this lifetime. Your work on earth is done. May you rest easy in the arms of Jesus. Paula, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this heartbreaking time.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my former teacher, Mr. Nearing. He was truly an incredible and understanding teacher who had a unique ability to make me feel seen and heard. Mr. Nearing understood my struggles as a young girl, both academically and personally, growing up in a lower socioeconomic background with little support at home. He was one of the few teachers who saw me for who I was, and his belief in me made all the difference.
It is because of his unwavering support and encouragement that I stand where I am today in my field of mental health and social work. His faith in my potential helped shape the path I’ve walked, and for that, I am forever grateful. I’ll always cherish that last handshake we shared at the Mayflower Mall many years ago. Mr. Nearing, you touched my life in ways I’ll never forget. You’ll always be remembered, and I will think of you for many years to come. Rest in peace, and thank you for everything.
