Obituary of Stevie Gillard, Glace Bay

Stevie loved this quote from his sister, Joanie, and wanted to use it: “Living was my biggest celebration of life and I had the joy of having a very loving family and devoted friends who walked life’s path with me.” - Joanie

It is with these words in mind that we sadly announce the passing of Stevie Gillard, a dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 in Glace Bay.

Born in Glace Bay, on October 23, 1943, Stevie was the son of the late Arthur and Anna (Buckland) Gillard.

Stevie was a proud member of local 682 (“Job well done by the Six-Eighty-Two!”) United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. Married to Marilyn (Chant) on August 12, 1967, they welcomed four sons. Stevie and Marilyn always welcomed friends and family, hosting many festive occasions with much love. His greatest enjoyments in life included reading, golfing, traveling and spending time with family and friends; especially his sons and grandchildren.

Stevie is survived by his devoted wife Marilyn (nee Chant), sons Todd (Susan), Jeffery (Jennifer), and his much-loved grandchildren. Stevie was predeceased by his sons Rodney and Bradley.

Also surviving are sisters, Bernice Donovan (late Neil), Karen Broderick (late Richard), Eleanor Allan; brothers, Gordon Gillard (late Babe), Richard (Sandra) Gillard and Wilfred.  He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Stevie was predeceased by sisters Joanie Clarke (late Lonnie), Martha Feaver; brothers, Ronnie Ratchford and Jimmy Gillard.

Forthright, devoted and loyal are words often used to describe Stevie. From his early days working on the Executive of the North Street Athletic Club, volunteering in his community and warmly greeting everyone he met, Stevie was loved by everyone who knew him. That was our dad, kind to everyone.

The family would also like to thank the staff of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, as well as Palliative Care and VON.

In honoring our father’s wishes, cremation will take place. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay, where a viewing will take place starting at 12 (Noon) on Tuesday, April 15th, followed by a service at 2:30 pm in the chapel, then a reception.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family by visiting: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
