Obituary of Wayne Gordon Brushett, New Waterford

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, son, and friend. Wayne Gordon Brushett, 76, of New Waterford passed unexpectedly on April 20, 2025.

Wayne was born in New Waterford on July 2, 1948, to the late Jessie "Pat" Brushett (Bonds) and Gordon Brushett. He was a devoted husband of 53 years to his beloved Charlotte, who we sadly lost in October 2024. Besides his parents and his wife, Wayne is predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and David MacLeod.

Wayne is survived by his two loving children, Michael and Meghan (John); his granddaughter, Eva, who was his pride and joy; his sisters, Patricia (Wayne) Sullivan and Doris Smith; his brother, Robert (Juana) Brushett; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Wayne was raised in Victoria Mines, the third child of five. He met the love of his life, Charlotte, in 1967 and they married in 1971. Throughout his life, Wayne exemplified the virtues of hard work and perseverance. From his early days in Victoria Mines to his 25-year long career as an industrial mechanic at the Sydney Steel Corporation, he was the embodiment of diligence and commitment. His passion for mechanical work and his expertise in the field earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike.

Wayne loved spending time with family and friends. He had a deep appreciation for History and Westerns and was known to binge "The Curse of Oak Island" and would spend weekend mornings watching "The Rifleman" with his young granddaughter. Wayne's involvement in his community was a testament to his character. Whether it was participating in the South Bar Fire Hall Mixed Dart League or lending a helping hand to his neighbours, Wayne's presence was felt and appreciated by all.

After retirement, Wayne enjoyed tinkering in his garage and in the yard. He could always be found working on one of his projects, never taking it easy. He was always on the go—usually with a Timmies in one hand. If he wasn’t tinkering, you could find him helping his wife at her workplace, Needs, until she retired.

His greatest joy, however, was his granddaughter Eva, who he would hug tightly every chance he got. She was the light of his life.

As a father and grandfather, Wayne's love and pride for his family were evident in everything he did. His children, Michael and Meghan, were the center of his world, and he instilled in them the values of honour, integrity, and compassion. He was a pillar of strength, always ready with a helping hand and an abundance of love. Yet, he was equally steadfast in offering them honest and straightforward advice. His bond with his granddaughter Eva was particularly special, and their time together, filled with laughter and joy meant everything to him.

Wayne will forever be remembered for his unyielding spirit, which we all just called plain stubbornness, his boundless kindness and his witty sense of humour. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but our cherished memories will continue to fill our hearts with his love. We will remember the rhythmic tapping of his pen on Saturday morning crossword puzzles, the joy of spontaneous ice cream drives, the laughter and camaraderie of weekend tarabish games, and the incomparable comfort of his hugs. His life's journey, marked by love, dedication, and unwavering support for his family and community, serves as an inspiration to all. As we remember Wayne, we celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to shine brightly.
