I met Martin occasionally through my sister-in-law Melissa. I didn't know Martin well but thought him to be kind and a little quirky. Though, if the measure of any parent can be taken in the lives of the children they raised then I believe Martin was a deeply caring man with strong family values which I see reflected in those he has left behind. I'm sadden for all those who knew him well and regret not getting to know him better.

Glenda and family I am saddened to hear of the death of Martin. I began my policing career in Glace Bay and had the pleasure of being doubled up with Martin. My career led myself to Ottawa and eventually I became a K9 officer trained by the O.P.P. Martin pursued his dreams of also becoming a K9 officer, he overcame many obstacles and was also trained by the O.P.P, and took great pride in his Police K9 and his ability as a K9 officer. Rest in peace my friend, keep a tight leash, and keep on tracking . Reg MacDonald

One night while working with Martin we attended a call at the General Hospital, while there a young lady was at OPD with a sick child , this individual didn’t seem to have much and needed a vaporizer for her child. On departing the Hospital Martin got me to drive him to his home
At 0330 hrs. While Martin was only gone for a few minutes he came out of his house with a vaporizer and told me to drive back to the Hospital to give this Lady the vaporizer, This is the character Martin was. He was very kind to people who were down and out, till we meet again my friend.

When my husband and I were 23 , we moved into our first home . Martin was our new next door neighbor. He and his family not only welcomed us with open arms , but went above and beyond that — Martin was there for us at every corner . He made it clear from day one that if we ever needed anything , he would be there and he meant it . When we had a project , Martin showed up with a helping hand . When my husband had a mishap with a snow blower , Martin was the one who drove us to the hospital . When we welcomed our first baby , he was on the doorstep with balloons and gifts . Even when we moved , he showed up to see how we were doing and gave us a tree for our new yard . He was a special & thoughtful person and I know how much he will be missed by his family & friends . Rest peacefully , Martin .

Yelling MARTIN MY BEST FRIEND. All winter long every time he seen me walking he would pick me and my daughter up. He was an amazing man and I want to extend my condolences to the family. I met Martin in September 1994 in Gravenhurst Ontario. I was with the O.P.P. starting the dog handler program along with Martin. It was tough, it was long, it was hard and if it wasn't for Martin I don't think I could have gotten through it. When I found it tough I would just look at the amazing man who left his family behind for 16 weeks. He excelled at everything he worked on, always smiling and positive and did everything he could to make things better for me even though I knew he was missing home something awful. We had a lot of laughs while training. A LOT of laughs. Martin made Kavik into the best Police dog I saw in my 22 years in the Canine unit.
A true family man and gentlemen who will be missed.
My heart goes out to Glenda , Melissa, Amy and families
Farewell my friend.

To Glenda and family, my deepest sympathy. I first met Martin when he played common school hockey, he was easy to coach, and as the obituary said he was a team player and definitely had that competitive spark either at 7am Monday morning practice or in a game. When we would meet we always had a good conversation. RIP Martin God Bless

It is hard to find words to describe how one feels with the loss of such a great family man and friend. Martin and I played hockey together from the age of four years right through to high school. Boy, could he skate, hit, and score! The fear of God was struck in many a player from outside of town when Martin was on the ice. When he laced on those skates, that kind, gentle, spirit was transformed into a fierce competitor. On and off the ice, you never had to be worried about your back. He had you covered.
Even after many years apart, when I came home and ran into him, it seemed like we had just talked the day before. Martin was that type of guy. He could put anyone at ease. Please accept our sincere condolences at this most difficult time. Rest in peace my friend. You have earned it.

We’re holding your family close in our hearts during this time.
Your home was truly a second home to me during our high school years. I’ll never forget Martin's kind, bright eyes — always filled with warmth and quiet humour. He was always up for getting us to all of our adventures and making sure we were home safe and well-fed.
He adored all of his girls — you could see it in every smile, every proud glance, every quiet act of care. He was the kind of father who made you feel safe, seen, and loved, whether you were his own child or just lucky enough to be part of the circle.
Sending all of our love to Glenda, Melissa, Amy, Daniel, and dear little Evan and Kate. What a gift it was to have him in your lives. Hold tight to those memories — he will always be with you there.
With love, The Knowles Family
