Obituary of Michael (Red Mick) McIntyre, Glace Bay

Michael Gregory "Red Mick" McIntyre, age 87 of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025 at Hospice Cape Breton with his family by his side.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Ignatius "Iggie" and Mary (Francis) McIntyre.

Mick was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Starting in 1968, he joined the Glace Bay Fire Department as a career fire fighter and volunteer. Mick served as deputy chief under six chiefs throughout his long career.

Outside of the fire department, Mick and his brother Billy carried on their father’s legacy of owning and operating Iggie’s Tavern & Albian Room. Later on, Mick opened his own business, Red Cell Block Beverage Room in Glace Bay.

He was also very active in sports, playing both hockey and baseball. Even at age 81 Mick was still playing hockey in the Huff and Puff league. In 1961, Mick was inducted into both the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame for softball and the Atlantic Sports Hall of Fame with the Caledonia Baseball team. As a business owner, he sponsored many hockey and baseball teams in the local commercial leagues.

Even in retirement Mick worked at both Curry’s and V.J. McGillivray’s funeral home, Glace Bay.

But most importantly, Mick will be remembered as a family man, kind and compassionate with his quick wit and unique sense of humour, he was an avid prankster.

Mick is survived by his four daughters, Anne Dannrath (Andreas), Cheryl Gouthro, Mary McIntyre-Burnham (Jen), Glenda- who was also his caretaker, one son, Michael Jr. (Sarah) McIntyre, eight grandchildren, Robert, Margaret, Colin, Shea, Bretton, Michael, Hannah, Christopher, six great grandchildren, Jace, Aria, Syah, Ari, Alaia, Harper and one on the way named Ben.

Mick is also survived by one sister, Lima (Kevin) and two brothers, Gerald (Ruth), Stewart (Anne Marie) as well as nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mick was predeceased by his loving wife, Evelyn (Morrison) McIntyre in 2013, three sisters, Eileen, Bernice, Ignace, four brothers, Billy, John, Joe and Brian.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, May 20th from 6-9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 21st at 11 am in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay followed by interment in the parish cemetery. A reception will take place at the Glace Bay Fire Department. Fr. Macleen Anyanwu presiding.

The family extend a sincere thank you to the VON, Palliative Care, Hospice Cape Breton and Homecare. As an expression of sympathy for Mick, memorial donations in his memory may be made to Hospice Cape Breton or Palliative Care (CBRH).
