Obituary of Garfield Adrian "Gaps" Shaw, Glace Bay

Garfield (Gaps) Shaw age, 92 of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5,2025 with his family by his side at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Glace Bay, N.S. he was the son of the late Clarence and Sadie (Lahey) Shaw.

Dad worked for 17 years with the S & L Railway before moving to Seaboard Generating Plant where he worked until his retirement in 1990.

In his younger years he enjoyed skating at the Miners Forum, bowling, and traveling to Toronto and Boston to visit family. He enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays and was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dad was a proud, honest, and respectful man who treasured his family. He was an outstanding Poppy. He had a sense of humor and wit; he liked playing jokes on those who knew him.

In his later years he loved to hang out with friends at Tim Hortons and had many laughs over a cup of coffee. He enjoyed playing darts at the firehall.

Garfield is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean (Boutilier), his daughters, Patricia Chant (Yann) and Tammy Gardiner (Rick), grandsons, Garrett Chant (Jessica), Michael Chant and Alex Gardiner, great grandchildren Lily and Jack Chant.

He is also survived by sisters, Delores Pherrill, Yvonne Muir (Andy), Joyce Thornton (Bob), sister-In-law, Barbara Shaw, brother-in-law, Gerald Chamberlain as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dad is survived by his good friends of many years, Carl Turner and Teddy MacSween.

He was predeceased by brothers, Gerald, Rex, Cletus, Eric, Danny, sisters-in-law, Eunice Shaw and Betty Shaw, sisters Margaret McEachern, Gloria McArter, Mary Shaw, Irene Chamberlain, brothers- in- law, Paul Pherrill, Joseph McEachern and Emerson McArter.

Garfield is predeceased by his grandson, Dylan Chant and granddaughter, Emma Gardiner and son- in- law, Wayne Chant.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10TH, 2025 from 12 (noon) until 1:45 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay followed by the funeral mass at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding.

Following the mass, all are invited to join the family in the lower level of the church for a reception. Interment in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
