Obituary of Brian (Muskie) Horwath, New Waterford

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian (Muskie) Horwath, age 66, on June 15, 2025 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born on December 30, 1958, Brian was the son of the late Frank and Bernadette (O'Hearn) Horwath.

A true coal miner, Muskie worked for Devco at Lingan Colliery for close to 25 years. "Pit talk" was shared often between Muskie and his mining buddies; they shared the humor, close bonds, and the struggles of working underground. Their stories and friendships continued long after the mines closed.

Following the closure of Lingan Colliery, Muskie joined the Carpenter's Union and worked for many years with his brother Bobby's company, Roclan Construction. He and Bobby shared a close relationship working together for many years.

Muskie embodied a passion for the open road on his Harley Davidson; and whether it was a day trip with his buddies around the Cabot Trail or a longer trip to the U.S., he valued the camaraderie, experiences and life-long friendships that came with biking adventures.

He also loved to spend time in his garage sharing a laugh with his buddies who dropped by; you know who you are. His garage was where he meticulously cared for his vehicles, maintaining them and keeping them in pristine condition. He especially loved his '68 Cutless 442.

Muskie loved to spend time with family. Birthdays and holidays were spent making memories that will be cherished forever.

Left to mourn are Cindy, and her family; sister, Brenda (John); brother, Bobby (Susan); nieces and nephews, Kimberly, Craig, Jill, Frankie, and Kirstie; special cousin, Wanda.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025 from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Deacon Lorne MacNeil officiating.
