It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (MacDonald) MacKenzie on Monday, July 28 in New Waterford Hospital at the age of 91.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late John Angus and Frances (MacMullin) MacDonald.
Mom will be remembered for her love of family; having family gather every Sunday for dinner. Mom enjoyed organizing parties for children as well as her own to have us gather to celebrate each other.
She enjoyed playing cards with her siblings and friends. Mom had a great sense of humor, loved preserving, gardening, baking and shopping; she still checked the flyers for deals and yard sales.
Mom loved to brag about her children, how we stick together as family. Our lives revolved around what she wanted. She was famous for saying " don't forget to say your prayers" or "if you are kind to people, it will always come back to you!"
Mom volunteered at Maple Hill Manor and for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years and received several awards of which she was very proud. She ran a boarding home for many years while raising five children and will be greatly missed by the many she has helped over the years.
Surviving are daughter, Maxine (Sander); sons, Wilfred (Victor), Sean (Kelly), Archie (Vanessa), and Willie (Kim); grandchildren, Gavin, Holly, Bradley, Ryan, Matthew, and Meagan; great-grandchildren, Gracelyn, Corey, Bryson, Cameron, Brayden, Alexis, Connor, Remi, Jordyn, Jaxson, Madison, and Brooklyn; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred; brothers, Angie, John "Nipper", and Sonny; sisters, Margaret, Betty, Katherine, Rachael, and Frances; granddaughter, Ashley.
The family is beyond thankful to New Waterford Homecare for their endless care and compassion. You have become mom's extended family. Special thanks to mom's Steady Girls, Ruth, Polly, Jessie, Roberta, Shannon, Lynn and Susie MacLean, who mom loved like her own. Mom was blessed with you all. Also thank you to mom's Nurse Practitioner, Michelle Turner, for her abundance of care and compassion and to the staff of New Waterford Hospital.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at 11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Father Godwin Obike officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
