Bruce Strong, Glace Bay Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of John William (Bruce) Strong, a resilient and proud man who left this world surrounded by love and family on August 1, 2025 at the age of 75 years.

A lifelong fisherman, Bruce found his greatest peace on the water. His boat was his sanctuary, and he spent countless hours setting gear and hauling traps and sharing stories on the open sea. It was in those quiet, steady moments on the water that his true spirit shone — calm, resilient, and deeply connected to the ocean.

Bruce was married to the love of his life, Helen (Neary) Strong, for 57 beautiful years. Their bond was unbreakable, and everything he did, he did with her by his side. Their love was the anchor of his life, and their devotion to each other was an inspiration to all who knew them.

He was a devoted father to his only child Belinda, who meant the world to him. His pride in her was boundless, and the love they shared was deep and unwavering. As a grandfather to two - Matthew and Madison and great-grandfather to four, Bruce embraced his role with open arms and a full heart. He lit up whenever his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were near, and he gave them the kind of love that leaves a lasting legacy. Bruce was also blessed with a wonderful son-in - law Jimmy who stood by his side throughout his illness to offer his support.

Bruce was the last living member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife Helen, daughter Belinda (Jim Andrea), grandson Matthew (Emily) Andrea, granddaughter Madison (Justin) Hache, great-grandchildren; Jude, Penelope, Lola and Jett, and a special nephew who was like a son-Troy MacIsaac and many other nieces, nephews, cousins & friends!

Bruce was predeceased by his parents Lew and Evelyn Strong, brothers -Gordon, Gary (Doc) and Lewellyn.

Bruce will be remembered for his witty sense of humor, his deep love for his family, and the way his eyes would light up when he talked about the sea, lobsters and his cars. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and simple joys.

There will be no service at the request of the family. Interment to follow. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Palliative Care Dept at CBRH in his memory. Special thank you to the palliative care team with particular mention to his favourite nurse Linda Murphy for the exceptional care and support.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
