John Roderick MacLennan, New Waterford Obituary

We, the family of John Roderick MacLennan, age 82, are sad to announce his peaceful passing on August 25, 2025, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.

Born in New Waterford on July 17, 1943, he was the son of the late Alexander D. MacLennan and Jessie (MacQuarrie) MacLennan.

In his younger years, John R. worked in Toronto at various jobs until returning home to New Victoria where he became the main caretaker to the family’s homestead (referred to as out home) in addition to working for the city/town as a facility painter.

John R. was a kind-hearted man who ensured that his aging mother was well cared for during her senior years. He lovingly gave of himself and of his time to care for Jessie. Wherever he went, she was sure to go; they were a team.

John R. was fascinated with cars. In his spare time, he would clean and polish his car; once shined to perfection, he would then take a shot through town and visit his family and friends along the way while keeping everyone up to date on all the news. He loved to dance and looked forward to the Legion dances on Friday nights, while Saturday afternoons were enjoyed at the Heather for talent time. Balmy summer Sundays were usually spent chatting with family and listening to music on the front Veranda while watching the ferries go by ending with a beautiful evening sunset.

John R. enjoyed staying connected and spending time with his siblings, nieces and nephews while they visited at the homestead during family get togethers where it was sure to end up in a kitchen party with a good time had by all.

During the spring of each year, he would paint and shine the house getting ready for the family from away to arrive for their annual summer visits. He could restore anything and bring it back to new again.

He is survived by his siblings, sister, Dolly Hill, Lower Sackville; brother, Alexander MacLennan, Ontario; sister-in-law, Diane MacLennan; brother-in-law, Wally Cameron. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Clem, Chisholm, Manion; sisters, Betty, Christena, Joan; brothers-in-law, Tantz Kearney, Stanley Bond, Duncan Hill, Thomas Clements; sister-in-law, Lydia MacLennan.

Our family would like to express sincere gratitude to the Cove Guest Home and the amazing staff at the Spanish Bay Unit who went above and beyond in the care of John R. over the years with professionalism, respect, kindness, and love.

Donations in John R.’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held in V.J.
