With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lorne Alexander MacDonald, age 78, of River Ryan, NS, who left us after a courageous battle with cancer. Lorne passed peacefully in Calgary, AB, surrounded by love, having faced his illness with dignity, and strength.
Lorne was born to the late Christina "Tiny" and James Alexander MacDonald and was the oldest of seven siblings. He spent the majority of his life in River Ryan, NS where he raised his family and spent his full working life.
Lorne began his working life in service to his country, joining the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served for five years, stationed in several locations across Canada and in Germany; an experience that shaped his discipline and work ethic.
Following his military service, Lorne became a Red Seal electrician and dedicated many years to working in the Lingan, Phalen and Point Aconi coal mines until the closure of the mines. After leaving the coal mines, he then continued to serve his community as a Commissionaire at several hospitals in the Sydney area until he fully retired in 2018.
Lorne carried himself with quiet confidence and an effortless ability to make friends wherever life led him. His gift for conversation drew people in. Those who knew him best will remember the way he made you feel as if you were the only person he wanted to share his stories with.
Lorne was a proud father and grandfather. He leaves behind his son, Chris (Natasha Dearing) MacDonald and cherished granddaughter, Brooklyn MacDonald; as well as his daughter, Kari MacDonald (Colin Allen). His family was his greatest joy, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness.
Lorne is also survived by his sister, Sandra MacDonald (Pete); brothers, Francis MacDonald and John (Lorraine) MacDonald and his aunts, Jean MacDonald and Rita Davis and many cousins. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Tiny (Christina) and James MacDonald; his siblings, Brian, Roberta (Bobbi), and Marie each of whom he held close in memory.
The family would like to thank the team at the Arthur J E Child Cancer Centre in Calgary, AB for their unwavering compassion and support that brought comfort and hope to Lorne during his most difficult days.
Lorne will be greatly missed and always remembered.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel,380 Smith Street, New Waterford, NS, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 . Father Damien MacPherson officiating. A reception will take place in the funeral home with burial to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a local cancer support organization in his memory.
