Fred King, Bridgeport Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Frederick “Freddie” King, age 91, on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

The son of Noah Eldon and Lydia Jane (Worth) King, Fred was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on Sept. 15, 1933. He moved to Glace Bay at an early age.

In his earlier years, he drove trucks for various companies, was a welder, and taught night school welding at Central School. He also worked at Howie’s Machine Shop for many years. But his true passion was fishing the 7 Kings— a legacy he built together with his sons. Da built several boats in his lifetime, and he retired from his passion after 35 years. He devoted the rest of his time to the love of his life, Kay.

Ma and Da enjoyed their Sunday drives, afternoon coffees, camping, and trips to Newfoundland. They enjoyed spending their evenings in the sunroom overlooking the ocean.

Da was known for his three trucks, and enjoyed his Newfoundland music and baking. He was known for his raisin bread, fruit cakes, and peppermint squares at Christmas. When he wasn’t baking, he could be found in the garage tinkering— fixing anything for anyone (and telling you what you did wrong to break it in the first place). Da was a jack of all trades and a master of them all.

Da is survived by his two daughters, Doris (Danny) Boutilier, Dominion, and Cathie King, Port Caledonia; two sons, Arthur “Teddy” (Linda), and Brian (Cathy), both in Glace Bay; 11 grandchildren, Carey, Bryan “Spanky”, Bradley, Megan, Amy, Mason, Courtney, Timothy, Denise, Trucker, Kalli; 12 great grandchildren; his daughter-in-law, Rose and many nieces and nephews.

Da was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Kay King, his son Timmy King, grandsons Christopher King and Dana King, his sisters Doris McCormick, Dolly Miller, Jean Burte, Helen Ross, Shirley all of Glace Bay, and Gloria Worthington of Ontario, his brother Willie King and son-in-law Gene McDonald.

We would like to extend our thanks to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff on 4B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and New Waterford Homecare.

As per his wishes, there will be no visitation held. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Private graveside prayers will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport. Memorial donations in memory of Fred may be made to Calvary Cemetery in Bridgeport.
