With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life so beautifully lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Anita Burke on Sept. 29th surrounded by the love of her family.
Born and raised in New Waterford, Anita grew up singing in the church choir, a joyful beginning to the music that would echo throughout her life. She brought that same love of music into her home, filling her family’s lives with song, warmth, and the kind of love that made everyone feel like they were her favorite.
Mom was the heart and soul of her family; a remarkable woman whose strength and softness lived side by side. She had a way of making everyone feel welcome, accepted, and loved. When we think of "home" we think of her.
She was the devoted wife of the late Stan Burke, with whom she now rejoins in heaven, along with her beloved grandson Jeff, her parents James and Janie (MacDonald) Fleming, and siblings Gerald, Kitty, Jim, Dennis, and Joe.
Mom leaves behind a proud and loving legacy through her ten children and their spouses; Stan (Lynn), Bob (Paula), Pius (Marg), AnneMarie (Brian), Kevin (Jo-Ann), Karen (Kevin), Brenda (John), Sharon (Charlie), Dianne (Derrick), June (Jason).
She was a proud grandmother to 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, each of whom she celebrated with pride. She kept every photo, every card, and every newspaper clipping; cheering them on in sports, school, and life.
Mom was good at just about everything she put her hand to; cooking unforgettable meals, winning at darts or cards, and sharing her love of sports (especially when her kids and grandkids were playing). She had an open heart and an open mind, accepting everyone exactly as they were, and always finding the good in others. Her faith was deep and unwavering, her optimism contagious, and her kindness boundless.
Her years in Catalone were some of her happiest, spent surrounded by family during countless gatherings, celebrations, and moments of joy. Our family is especially grateful to Brenda and John, who lovingly welcomed Mom into their home in her later years. She truly enjoyed her time with them and cherished the love and care they gave her.
We extend heartfelt thanks to the Hospice staff, whose compassionate care brought comfort and peace in her final days.
Mom often said, “I am so blessed.” But we, her family, were the truly blessed ones; to have been loved by her, taught by her, and shaped by her enduring example of faith, love, and kindness.
She leaves us with a lasting legacy:
Lead with a kind heart. Offer a few kind words. Accept and love others. Cherish the gifts you are given. And remember — it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.
When you spent time with Mom, you always left with a full heart. May we all carry her spirit forward.
