Aileen Marie (MacLeod) Flynn, New Waterford Obituary

The family of Aileen Marie (MacLeod) Flynn, 81 of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, announces her sudden passing in Florida on November 10th, 2025. Known for her quick wit, caring personality, and practical nature, Aileen made an impact on the lives of the people who knew her.

The majority of her 35-year teaching career was spent at Breton Education Centre (BEC) where she taught home economics. Aileen worked to ensure students not only enjoyed her classes but gained skills they could carry into their everyday lives. After completing her Master’s in Education in Detroit, she went on to develop innovative learning opportunities at BEC that saw students running early-childhood programs and designing coats for people experiencing homelessness. Aileen was an avid reader with a love of learning. She was always eager to pick up a new skill or explore something unfamiliar, whether it was a new game, a hobby, or taking university classes at CBU during her retirement.

With quiet confidence, Aileen could turn ideas into reality with ease. When her children or someone she knew brought an idea, she welcomed it and was happy to map out the steps to make it happen. From sewing clothing and formal dresses to creating costumes and outdoor wear, no project was too small or too complex. Her creativity was not limited to textiles. She’ll be well remembered for the many dishes she made and for always making room at the table for anyone that came over for dinner.

In her retirement, she turned her focus to family, community, and to her love of travel. Along with her husband and Canadian friends, she spent many winters in Florida enjoying the sunshine and traveling. Aileen was a people person who was fortunate to carry the gift of the gab. No matter where she went, making connections came naturally due to her genuine interest in people whether it was in her home community or while travelling abroad. Aileen loved to explore but was always keen to return back home to Cape Breton, to her little slice of heaven in Chimney Corner.

Aileen was predeceased by her daughter Leanne Flynn; mother Christine MacDonald, father John (Bevis) MacLeod; sister Mary MacLeod, and brother Duncan MacLeod. She is survived by her husband Melin Flynn and her children Timmy Flynn (Amanda Odo), Ryan Flynn, Maureen Flynn, Colleen Flynn (Gary Nasen), Blaire Flynn (Steve Caruso). Aileen was incredibly proud of her grandchildren, Bailey, Emmet, Robert, Mallory, Shannon, Myra, Maggie, Cole, Elizabeth, and Ellis.

To honour Aileen, make a good cup of tea, or pour a drink, settle into your favourite spot to watch the sunset and think about what you can do, within your means, to help somebody else. Donations in Aileen’s honour can be directed to Every Woman Centre in Sydney, NS: https://www.everywomanscentre.com or the Jericho Road Ministries Women’s Shelter (for those in the Florida area).

Funeral arrangements, under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
