It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph (Joey) Vincent Doucette, age 76, of New Waterford, Nova Scotia. Joey passed peacefully in the early morning of December 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born the youngest child of William and Elizabeth Doucette, Joey grew up on George Street in New Waterford. Following in his father’s footsteps, he began his career as a coal miner with DEVCO; a role he embraced with immense pride. Throughout his years underground, Joey became a cherished member of the Mine Rescue team, known fondly as the Draggermen, and competed in several rescue competitions across North America. His courage and skill were called upon during the Westray Mine Disaster, where he and his team searched tirelessly for days for the miners who had tragically lost their lives. In 1994, Joey was awarded a Medal of Bravery for his heroic efforts, though his family had always known him as a hero.
Joey was also a proud member of Cape Breton Search and Rescue for several years. An avid fisherman and lifelong outdoorsman, he especially treasured hunting trips with his father and brothers. Gifted with his hands, he was remarkable with woodworking and could fix just about anything placed in front of him.
Following the closing of the mines, Joey and his brother Billy travelled across Cape Breton schools to teach younger generations about the history of coal mining. Their collected stories and historical knowledge were later incorporated into tours at the Miners Museum in Glace Bay. Joey later pursued carpentry at NSCC, graduating in 2005, and spent several years working out west with his son Joey as a scaffolder. After retiring, he returned home to New Waterford, where he spent his remaining years surrounded by family, friends, and his beloved pets.
Joey is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Barbara; his children, Joseph Jr. (Wanita) and Lisa; his step-children, Barbie, Roy, and Matthew; his sister, Mary Dawe; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews; and three treasured great-grandchildren. Special mention is made of his lifelong friend, Jimmy Musial. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Elizabeth, and his brother, Billy.
Da was loved by all who knew him. He made friends wherever he went and was a storyteller unmatched; quick with a witty remark, a playful comeback, or a tale from the pit guaranteed to spark laughter. His heart was immense, and he helped others quietly and generously. The Doucette kitchen table was often surrounded by miners sharing stories, laughter, and a sense of family; memories his loved ones will hold forever.
Joey will be deeply missed by many, but especially by his family, who cherished every moment spent with him.
Memorial donations may be made to Lung Association of NS and PEI or Hospice/Palliative Care Society at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of 4C at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, as well as the team at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, and Greg MacKinnon for the exceptional and compassionate care given to Joey.
Cremation will take place. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 15 from 6-8 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A reception will follow in the funeral home.
