Joan Ann MacNeil, Glace Bay Obituary

On December 25, 2025, Joan Ann MacNeil passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital while in the arms of her family, fully surrounded by her children’s love. She was 85.

Born and raised in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Michael “Big Mick” and Frances (Casey) MacKinnon.

Joan was known for her strength and genuine kind soul, but her real superpower was being a Mum. She deeply loved her family; her support was powerful and unwavering. Her children brought her pride and pure joy; she brought them a sense of peace and security. Joan had a special way of knowing when you needed her to listen, offer advice, make you laugh, or help solve a problem; regardless, you could always count on her mentioning that pink guy or using any of her “special” terms of endearment.

Spending time with forever friends – gathering and telling stories of their past adventures brought Joan such happiness. She knew how to have fun and laughs were guaranteed if she was at the table.

Joan enjoyed a long-time career with the local CUPE office; throughout the years she often spoke of the relationships and great memories she shared with the members. She was a 10-year survivor of Breast Cancer, a battle she fought aggressively with a positive attitude and a sprinkle of stubbornness.

Joan’s memory will live on in the hearts of her four children—Michael “Mick”, Maureen, Tracey, and Dan (Amanda); her brother Patrick (Sheila); her grandchildren Brett, Brodie, Brennan, Michael, Hayley, Josh, Danielle, Jesse, and Jayden; as well as her great-grandchildren Bria, Elijah and Brooks.

She will be greatly missed by her brother-in-law Billy “Whistler” and his wife Sheila, nieces, nephews, and Marilyn McKinnon (Andrew), whom she considered her adopted family.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, husband of 36 years Vincent “Bubba” and cherished sister Mary Woodman.

Her family would like to thank Dr. James MacLean, EHS, as well as the staff at Seaview Manor and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the compassionate care she received over the years.

The family, would really like to add a thank you to Kenny and V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home for your help honoring Joan... and the stories that were shared about Big Mick.. they were comforting (and shared with the family).

Joan was a true lover of animals and had a special place in her heart for people experiencing tough times; We know she would be delighted if any memorial donations were made to the Cape Breton SPCA or to the Cape Breton Cancer Center.

Joan was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, and her faith guided her through life. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A mass will be announced at a later date.
