It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of James Ronald Nearing of Glace Bay, who passed away on December 27, 2025, at the age of 88, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with family by his side.

James was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years Marie Patricia Roach (October 2019).  Together they shared a life filled with love and memorable moments – especially on the dance floor where James was always happy to cut a rug with Marie by his side.

He was also predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Matilda Nearing (Milley); his brothers Thomas, Johnny and Frank; and his sisters Bridget (infancy) and Mary.

James is survived by his loving children, Charmaine (Douglas Sampson), Sydney, Wendy (Robert Cooney), Ontario, Michele (Dennis Neels), British Columbia, James (Colette Crowell), Ontario and Sherry (Robert Harris), Dominion.

He will be dearly missed by his granddaughters Kayla (Will Rithaler), Jessica (Daryl Ware-Lane) of British Columbia, and Kirsten and Ashley Nearing of Ontario; as well as his four beautiful great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Alexandra, Charlotte and Lincoln, all of British Columbia.  James is also survived by 10 siblings, George, Florence, Joseph, Pauline, Paula, Eva, Kevin, Matilda, Wayne and Corinne.

James entered the coal mines at a young age and worked until the age of 52, when he was forced to retire due to health reasons.  Known as a true jack of all trades, he was resourceful, hardworking, and always able to figure things out for himself.

He cherished family camping trips, Sunday drives, and picnics with Marie and their five children, finding joy in life’s simple pleasures and creating lasting memories.  Later in life, James and Marie enjoyed long walks on the Dominion beach boardwalk, travelling and spending time with their grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to the compassionate staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit (CBRH) for their constant care and kindness during James’ final moments, as well as to the staff of the Harborview Ward at MacGillivary Guest Home.

Donations in memory of James may be made to the Palliative Care Unit (CBRH) or to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.  The funeral mass will be held in May of 2026 with final details being sent out at a later date. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
