Neil Joseph “Joe” Gilmet, age 83 of Reserve Mines passed away on Thursday, January 8th, 2026 in the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Neil McKinnon & Bertha Gilmet.
Joe was a hardworking coal miner for over 30 years. He was an avid CB’er and also enjoyed snowmobiling, fixing cars and fishing. Joe was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He will be remembered as a very caring family man.
Joe is survived by his two sons, Corey (Kim), Derrick and his daughter, Joanne (Brian) Sinclaire, grandchildren, Brian, Kevin, Leah, Ryan, Nellena, Edward and great grandchildren, Jensen, Lucas and Sophie.
He was predeceased by his wife, Florann “Flo” (MacLean) Gilmet and his siblings.
Visitation will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 from 2-4, 7-9 pm followed by a funeral mass on Thursday, January 15 at 11 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. Fr. Dan Boudreau presiding. The reception will be held in Dominion Fire Hall.
