With deep sorrow and much love, we mourn the passing of Patrick James Ratchford, age 50, on January 17, 2026, in Edmonton, Alberta. He most recently resided in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Born on October 8, 1975, Patrick, also fondly known as Paddy, was the son of Monica (Ratchford) Thornton and John Thornton, and a brother to Tara Thornton.

Paddy graduated from Hants East Rural High School in 1995 and went on to spend his career working in the oil industry; a path that took him around the world. His work ethic, adaptability, and willingness to go wherever the job led reflected his independent spirit.

Above all else, Paddy loved his dogs more than anything. He will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, and humor, as well as the ease with which he formed friendships. Known to many he had an extraordinary circle of friends and will be deeply missed by so many.

Paddy is predeceased by his grandparents, Paddy and Margaret Ratchford as well Doug and Marg Thornton; his uncles, Francis, Clarie, Kevin, Raymond Ratchford and Jimmy Bailey and Mergie Campbell. He is remembered by his aunts, Patsy, Valerie, Darlene, Susan and Heather; cousins, Deanna, Francis, Jillian, Gerard, Jill, Lisa, James, Megan, Ryan, Troy, John-Blair and Clorice. He was surrounded throughout his life by a devoted and extensive family who will carry his memory forward.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026 from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Father Jim Oliver officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia SPCA or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
