Robert "Chickie" Elias McDonald, L.P.N., Glace Bay Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert “Chickie” McDonald at the Palliative Care Unit, CBRH on January 26th, 2026 at the age of 70. Born in New Aberdeen, Glace Bay, Robert was the son of the late James “Chick” and Florence (Rowe) McDonald. He is survived by two sisters, Carol Anne McDonald and Michelle Hardy (Bill), one brother Donnie McDonald (Ellen) and brother-in-law, Gerard McPhee. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews, especially Devon, Lacey, Logan, Marcie, Jasea, Noah and great nieces and nephew Nathan, Mya and Mila.

Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by his two sisters, Janice McPhee and Joyce McDonald, sister-in-law, Sharon McDonald and godparents, Wish and Cecilia Kelly. Chickie spent 38 years working as a nurse at Harbourstone, a role he truly excelled in and deeply loved. He was known as an outstanding nurse who cared for his residents with patience, skill, and genuine kindness. During his studies he was honoured with top of his class and was awarded Best bedside manner. Chickie was loved by the residents and his coworkers, many of whom considered him not just a colleague, but a friend.

Outside of his work, Chickie embraced life with joy and humor. He had a deep love of music. He was well known for telling jokes and could always be counted on to make others smile. Chickie also loved spending time on the golf course, and driving around in his Toyota. At home, he shared a special bond with his beloved cat, Marbin. Chickie will be dearly missed by his family, friends and coworkers especially his Shannex crew, Kelli, Blair, Dan, Cathy, Darlene, Colleen & Bryan, his rat pack and longtime friend, Hughie McInnis. Special thanks to nephew Logan Routledge and nieces Marcie and Lacey McPhee for their incredible care and going above and beyond for Chickie. Also, thanks to the staff on 4A and the palliative care unit for the kindness and compassion you have shown.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 4th, 2026 from 5-7 p.m. in V.J.
