It is with heavy hearts, that we the family & friends announce the passing of one of the brightest people in our lives, Gerald Anthony (Tony) Mahoney, age 42 on January 24, 2026 surrounded by love in the CBRH, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Tony was the son of the late Gerald Anthony Sr. & Dorothy Agnes (Morrison) Mahoney.
Although born in Glace Bay, Tony loved to travel & always had a great admiration for Cape Breton Island, doing anything he could to help others or his community. He assisted many people through the job he held at the Ally Centre as a peer worker. He was committed to getting out there helping his community.
Tony also was a culinary artist, with a love for all things food, he was an amazing chef. He had a great love for music, creating music, playing guitar, listening to music for comfort, it was a big source of peacefulness in his life.
Near the end, Tony got to spend the day with his special friend, Steven Andrews who sat, playing guitar for Tony, which brought so much joy to him. Tony had an infectious laugh that had a way of making everyone else laugh and putting them in a cheerful mood.
He faced many struggles, but never ever placed his hardships on other people. When Tony's closest friends learned he was in hospital, he still stayed strong only asking for simple things, like a blanket from home and an orange tangerine quencher from Tims. Through his work in the Ally Center, he met Christine Robinson and they created a special bond. Christine was by Tony's side to help him through everything while he was in the hospital, which meant a lot to Tony.
Tony will be missed very much by his son, Mason Chamberlain, whom he loved dearly as well as Tony's friends who were by his side daily, especially his special friend, Katlin MacLeod, good friend Crystal MacDonald, and best friend David England. Tony was surrounded by love with these three friends by his side until the last second.
Tony left a huge impact on everyone he knew and will be missed by so many friends and family. To know Tony was a blessing - a true friend, whenever you were down, Tony's brightness would lift you up, as soon as you were around him.
We would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, 3rd floor ICU. The nurses who helped not only Tony, but his friends and walked us through losing our friend.
If you would like to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke foundation in Tony's memory, feel free to do so, Thank you.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Interment will be held in the spring of 2026 in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wallace Road, Glace Bay with the date and time to be announced. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
Of all the special gifts in life
However great or small,
To have you as a friend
Was the greatest gift of all
May the winds of love blow softly
And whisper in your ear
"We love and miss you friend and wish that you were here."
“Deep in our hearts, your life is kept to love and cherish, not forget. No more tomorrows we can share, but yesterdays are always there.”
