Alexander (Alex) Fraser, New Waterford Obituary

With loving memories and grieving hearts, we announce the passing of Alexander (Alex) Fraser, aged 87. Born in Glace Bay he lived a life full of love.

No stranger to hard work, he was employed at Devco for 40 years. In retirement he remained industrious, applying his skilled hand, attention to detail and determination to always “ do it right” around the home and for others. A beautiful singer and guitar player he enjoyed many of life’s pastimes, but nothing more than being with the people he loved. His memory will always be cherished by family and friends as a dedicated companion-someone who was always there to lend support, to help however he could, and to truly listen when it mattered most.

Alex’s wit and wisdom benefitted everyone who knew him. His kind and gentle nature always let his loved ones know they mattered and were supported. Whether through his words, his presence or one of his legendary hugs, his caring and selfless ways were always present for those fortunate enough to call him husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Patience and tenderness guided him, qualities much needed in raising his boys. He welcomed a good debate and made his case with intelligence, curiosity, and humility,  often with a glint of humour and delight in his eyes. He always had time for and saw the best in everyone. Whether it was playing with his grandchildren, sharing stories, or offering advice to family and friends, he was always fully present with those he loved and found much joy in those moments.

Alex was the son of the late Hugh and Annie (Fahey) Fraser. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Stephen (Ann); grandson, Andrew; brothers, Fabe, Hugh, Ron, and brothers-in-law, Bill Holm, Jim Miles, Jim Odo, Jackie Odo, Carl Chapell, and John Grenier, and sisters-in- law, Audrey Fraser and Gayle Odo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helena, to whom he was a devoted husband and steadfast partner, and who meant everything to him. Alex is also survived by sons, Kevin (Madlyn), Glen (Kelly), Darren (Karen), and Graham (Jerri-Ellen); sisters, Carolyn, Beverly, and Harriet (Joe) Higgins and sisters-in-law, Warna, Mary, Sheila, and Jeanette; many nieces and nephews to whom he was always close, especially Fabe and Warna’s children. Alex was the proud papa to 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Alex was not only a good man, he was the greatest example of what a good man could be. Alex brought great joy, care and immeasurable love to our hearts, and his passing leaves great sorrow.

Cremation has taken place. As per his wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
