Agnes Lucy Marie "Polly" (Murrant) Wareham of New Waterford, Cape Breton passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9, 2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by family.
Polly was born at the Shore in New Waterford to proud parents Murray "Buck" and Ethel (McNeil) Murrant.
Polly went to Central School watched carefully by older brother, John because no one touched his sisters, Polly or Sandra. When she was 18, Polly married her school sweetheart, Greg Wareham. Still in her youth, they went to Halifax and then Ontario looking for work but it wasn't too long before returning to the Shore in New Waterford. She remained there the rest of her life. Polly loved life at the shore and took so many walks along the cliffs like her father before her. In her last few years when poor health kept her from the cliffs, her husband Greg got her a scooter and she would race him to the end of the road when she was up to it.
Polly had several jobs throughout her life; in Halifax, Ontario, Sydney and New Waterford. She sold Ice cream and popcorn at the Mayflower Mall, flipped burgers for A & W, and stamped Sterling on a million Sterling faucets on an assembly line in Ontario. Polly's greatest job was Mother to her Son, Jimmy and Daughter, Angela. She did anything for them with Greg at her side.
Polly spent many hours and years serving her community through the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Canada. Polly was able to learn a great deal as she became Club President and then Zone Co-ordinator for all the Cape Breton Clubs. Still, she continued to serve all of the Atlantic Kinette clubs as District Co-ordinator. Polly made more friends through Kin then anyone could imagine and still keeps many of them close. Many will greatly feel her loss.
Those left to morn are her husband and best caretaker, Greg Wareham and her daughter, Angela of whom she was most proud; her neighbour and only Sister, Sandra (Murrant) Wilson; brother-in-law, John O Wilson; sisters-in-law, Heather (DeBreau) Murrant, Charlene (Wareham) Armstrong (Gordie), Karen (Wareham) McMaster, Evelyn (Burke) McDonald, Bernadette (Markotjohn) Wareham, Janice (Kavanaugh) Wareham, and Carolyn (Watts) Wareham; brothers-in-law, Gerard Wareham (Edna) and Brian Wareham.
Polly was predeceased by her son, Jimmy Wareham and his daugther; Polly's only grandaughter, Nikki Wareham; parents, Murray "Buck" and Ethel (McNeil) Murrant; brother, John Murrant; father and mother-in-law, Danny and Vange (Burke) Wareham; brothers-in-law, Frankie McMaster, Wally Wareham, Danny Wareham, Kevin Wareham, and Blair Wareham. Polly leaves behind to mourn many neices and nephews. Also Special Neice and caretaker, Shawna Murrant.
The Family would like to express much gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the ICU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the caring way they looked after Polly in her last days.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation for Polly will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford from 12 to 2 p.m. on Wednesda, Feb.18. Funeral Mass will take place in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave, on Thursday, February 19 at 10 a.m. with Father Godwin Obike officiating. Reception will follow at the K.O.C. Burial will be held at a later date.
