Agnes Louise Romeo, age 105, New Waterford Obituary

It is with deep sadness and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Agnes Louise Romeo who left this world peacefully in her sleep on February 23, 2026—just 5 days past the day she was born on February 18th, 1921, and in the very same home where her remarkable life began. Agnes lived fully and gracefully for 105 years, and it brings comfort to her family that she was able to fulfill her long‑held wish of remaining in her childhood home until the end.

Agnes was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Nancy (Nettie) and Fred Romeo; her sisters Ada Romeo and Josephine (Josie) Romeo; and her baby brother, John Joe Romeo. Though she outlived them all, she carried each of them in her heart every day.

A proud graduate of Mount Carmel High School, Class of 1938, Agnes began her working life at Woolworths before joining Canada Post, where she found her true professional home. Agnes excelled at everything she put her mind to. Her dedication, intelligence, and steady work ethic earned her great respect as she advanced through the organization, ultimately retiring at the age of 57.

Generosity and kindness were defining traits of Agnes’s life. She cared deeply for her family, and friends, and she held a special place in her heart for Susan MacDonnell, Frank MacDonnell (deceased) her goddaughter, Marilou MacDonald and Richard MacDonald (Brittany); their children Elizabeth, Brooklyn, Owen and Hudson. Agnes enjoyed her visits and reminiscing with her only surviving cousin, Greg Larade, as they were the last of their generation. Her faith was a guiding force, and she was a devoted member of St. Leonard’s Church, where she had volunteered faithfully—naturally gravitating to the task of managing the books.

Agnes had a zest for life that lasted well over a century. After retirement Agnes spent her leisure days traveling to many locales, one of her favorites being Hawaii. Memories of all her travels would be the topic of conversation whenever she met someone who shared the travel bug. She loved to dance and often reminisced about evenings spent at dances in Sydney, North Sydney, and New Waterford and even a journey to Debert during the war years. She also had a great love for numbers—a passion that served her well in her work at Canada Post and continued long into retirement. Every Sunday at precisely 1900 hours, her cousin (once removed) Wayne LaRade would call, and Agnes would be ready by the phone with her checkbooks. Together, they would go over debits, credits, and track down any discrepancies. Her sharp mind and attention to detail never faded; she remained engaged, curious, and wonderfully herself until her final days.

On Agnes’ behalf the family would like to thank Grace Timmons, Emma MacLeod, Tanya Wadden and Colleen MacDonald for their gracious care in Agnes’ later years. Their support, personal care and dedication allowed Agnes to remain safe and secure in her home until her final days. Special thanks as well to Dr. Lowry for providing Agnes with excellent medical care when needed.

Agnes’s long life was marked by love, service, loyalty, and quiet strength. She will be remembered not only for the years she lived, but for the warmth, dignity, and grace she carried through every one of them.

There will be no visitation. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 6th, 2026 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Fr. Jim Oliver presiding.
