It is with great sadness, that we announce our beloved mothers passing to her eternal life with her loving saviour on Tuesday, March 10th, 2026.

Elizabeth Jane Thomas, age 103 of Port Morien passed away peacefully at her residence with her family by her side.

Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late George & Mary (Doucet) Fortune. Elizabeth was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Thomas.

She was involved in her local community by volunteering with the Red Cross for over 35 years. Elizabeth was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Women’s Auxiliary and a faithful blood donor. She enjoyed cross word puzzles and painting beach rocks. Elizabeth was a member of the Carmelites and very devoted to our Heavenly Mother.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Treige, Brenda Cathcart, Patricia & Ken Smith, Karen & George Mitchell, son Greg Thomas, special nephew, Calvin Thomas, 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild whom she loved dearly and forever, they were always in her heart and prayers.

Besides her parents and husband, Elizabeth was predeceased by her sons, Joseph Jr. and George, a daughter in infancy, Nora Louise and a son in-law, Doug Cathcart.

A special thank you to the VON, homecare, doctors, nurses, Fr. Norman MacPhee and special friend, Joyce Peach as well as her special cousins, Sadie Stockley and Mary Burton.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 15th, 2026 from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 16th at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Port Morien with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Interment at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

As an expression of sympathy for Elizabeth, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Red Cross or a charity of one’s choice.
