Elizabeth Anne MacLean, New Waterford Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth "Anne" (Campbell) MacLean; a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Surrounded by family, she passed away peacefully at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on April 14, 2026, at the age of 85.
Born in Scotchtown on June 30, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (MacEachern) Campbell and spent most of her life there.
Anne was a devoted wife to her late husband, Samuel “Sam” MacLean, with whom she shared 53 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and quiet dedication in their home in Scotchtown.
Anne dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching after completing her studies at the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro. She taught Primary, Grade 3, and Grade 4 at Scotchtown Memorial School and St. Agnes Elementary School, where she made a lasting impact on the many students she taught throughout her career. She often spoke fondly of her years in the classroom, sharing stories and memories of her students and experiences, which she truly cherished.
She was a caring and proud mother and grandmother who found her greatest joy in her family. Anne was a quiet, private person with a gentle and kind nature. She especially enjoyed spending time with her loved ones and was always happiest in their presence. Whether it was time spent at home, sharing stories, or simply appreciating each other’s company, those moments meant the most to her. She also took great pleasure in her daily conversations with her sister-in-law, Florence, which were a special and meaningful part of her routine.
In her later years, Anne cherished the time she spent with Sam at Maple Hill Manor. Sitting together in the living room, playing card games, and the company of others brought her comfort and happiness. Their time together was a continuation of the strong bond they shared throughout their lives.
Anne is survived by her son, Sheldon (Cara), and her grandchildren, Adam (Sara) and Amy (Tyler). She is also survived by her in-laws, Inga Campbell; Dougald (Lexie), Joseph (Rita), Norman (Agnes) MacLean; Kaye Basile; Florence Bushnik; Margie MacDonald; and Joan MacLean; as well as her special friends, Agnes (Phonse) Martell; and Kevin and Maureen Murray. She will also be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, extended family, and her beloved fur buddy, Roman.
In addition to her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband, Sam; her parents-in-law, Donald Angus and Mary Ann (MacKinnon) MacLean; her brothers, Frankie (Rita), Peter, and Raymond Campbell; her sisters, Mary (Gerald) Hearn and Agnes (Tom) McIsaac; her brothers-in-law, John (Margie), Ronnie MacLean, Jim Bushnik, Francis MacDonald, and Joe Basile; and her sister-in-law, Regina MacLean.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital—especially Dr. Azer, Dr. Duduyemi, and Emberly Heffernan—for their care and compassion in her final days.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 19, from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
A Funeral Mass of celebration will take place Monday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan, at a later date. A reception will be held at the K.O.C.
