Carol "Joan" Muise, age 86, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026 with family by her side after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Graham) MacKinnon. Joan was raised by her grandmother, Effie, after the early passing of her mother.

Joan graduated from MacDonald High in 1957 and attended the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro the following year to obtain her teaching diploma. Most of her career was spent teaching grade two at Mount Carmel where she retired after 31 years.

Joan was a loving mother to four boys, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

In summers, her favourite place to relax was her cottage in Shenacadie. She would spend weekends entertaining, playing cards, and enjoying the beach with family and friends. Most notably, her neighbours, her aunt, Mamie, David, Rhodena and their children, Lisa and Bernard.

In her final years, she enjoyed spending time with her cat, Chloe, and going for drives with her youngest grandson, Scott.

Joan is survived by her sons, David (Lucy) and Daniel; five grandchildren, Miranda (Greg), Wendy, David (Breanne), Rachel (Francis), and Scott; five great-grandchildren, Logan, Kailee, Keegan, Noah, and Taylor.

Joan was predeceased by her sons, Michael and Glen as well as Bernie, the father of her children.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 22 at 10 a.m., in the Parish Church of St. Leonard with Father Jim Oliver officiating.
