It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Alexander O’Brien after a short but hard battle with cancer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

Growing up, John had a deep love for music and horses. Music remained a lifelong passion, and throughout the years he proudly played in various bands, sharing his talent and love of life with those around him.

John was predeceased by his common-law wife, Maudine Christie, as well as his parents, Joan O’Brien and John O’Brien.

He leaves behind his loving children, Katelynn O’Brien, Jonathan O’Brien, and Edward O’Brien. He will also be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren: Alex, Nevaeh, Harmony, Carter, Noah, Payton, Cameron, Josie, and EJ.

John also leaves behind his brother, George O’Brien (Trish O’Brien), and his beloved nieces, Quinn and Faith.

One of the greatest joys in John’s life was watching his grandson Alex play hockey. Those moments brought him immense pride and happiness and became some of his most treasured memories.

John will be remembered for his love of music, his sense of humor, and the memories he created with family and friends. Though he faced life’s challenges, he continued to live in his own way — with laughter, stories, and the people he loved close by.

There will be no visitation or service by request. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford.
