Raymond Arthur Gillis, Glace Bay, Baddeck Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Arthur Gillis, who passed away peacefully at Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, on June 14, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Ray was the son of the late Alexander and Katherine (Jackson) Gillis. He served his country for 28 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force, beginning as an Aero Engine Mechanic on the CF-104 in Baden, Germany, and retiring as a Master Warrant Officer Flight Engineer on the Boeing 707 tanker and transport fleet.
Aviation was his life.
Ray is survived by his brother, Gerry Gillis, and will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Katherine Gillis; and his siblings, Molly Haskett, Mary MacKinnon, and Michael “Mick” Gillis.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff of Alderwood Rest Home for their compassion, care, and support.
Ray was a man of character, integrity, and had a genuine joie de vivre. His life was exemplary to the family, particularly the boys. Not a one of us failed to adore him. He set a high bar for his nephews and, amazingly enough, we all grew into successful gentlemen while remaining the apple of his eye.
He was a man's man, skilled at skydiving, downhill ski racing, hunting, fishing, and holding both a black belt in karate and Golden Gloves honours in boxing.
Not only was Ray a man's man, he also had an eye for the ladies because they certainly had an eye for him. As a consummate bachelor, one of the side benefits of a career in aviation was meeting stewardesses from around the world. There are undoubtedly a few hearts breaking today because Ray never chose just one to love—he loved them all.
Outside the family, Ray was a man you could count on. His word was his bond. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. The Funeral Mass for Ray will be celebrated on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Baddeck followed by a reception at RCL, Branch 53, Baddeck. Interment will take place at a later date. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
Farewell to an aviator, mentor, and friend.
