Thomas Gerald "Gerry" McIntyre passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Mary (Dodd) McIntyre, by ten months.

A proud Cape Bretoner, Gerry was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, son of the late Henry Ignatius ‘Iggie’ and Mary Adele (Francis) McIntyre. He was predeceased by five brothers:  John, Joseph ‘Joe,’ William ‘Billy,’ Brian and Michael ‘Red Mick’; and three sisters: Bernice, Kathryn ‘Ignace,’ and Eileen.

His loss is deeply mourned by his remaining family: sister Lima McVeigh-McPherson (Kevin), brother Stewart McIntyre (Ann Marie), and many nieces and nephews; five children: Robin (Bob MacGowan), David (Jane), Sandra (Liam Black), Scott (Sarah), and Kelly (Al Perdue); and ten grandchildren: Taigan MacGowan (Sadie McVey), Ty MacGowan (Sarah), Del MacGowan (Sydney Stewart), Molly McIntyre (Ryan King), Payton McIntyre, Cameron McIntyre, Jaxon Perdue, Rian Perdue, Dashiell Black and Esme Black.

Gerry built a good and happy life on the pillars of faith, family and community. A devoted and long-time parishioner of St. Monica’s Church, he drew strength and solace from God and his church community. He kept close contact with his large McIntyre family and returned to Cape Breton Island as often as he could. He met Ruth Dodd in the late fifties when stationed at the Air Force base in Centralia, near London, Ontario. They married in 1961. Gerry took a job with the Government of Canada to support a large family of his own. He encouraged his children to work and study hard, be active, and find a way to contribute. A talented hockey player since his youth, he played well into his eighties and was inducted into the 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame. He was an avid golfer for many years and loved to watch sports on television, especially his beloved Detroit Red Wings and Boston Red Sox.

A quiet but strong-minded person, Gerry modelled for all of us how to live a principled life and how to love through action and deed. He will be missed profoundly.

Thank you to all of Gerry’s dear friends, especially Betty and Egan MacDonald, Ron Dowdall, and Joe Curry; his wonderful Tripp Crescent neighbours; his hockey mates and golf buddies; and Fr. Pierre Champoux and the congregation at St. Monica’s Parish. We are grateful for the doctors, especially Dr. Hanif Charania and Dr. Yingwei Liu, nurses and support staff who offered him such exceptional care.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Kelly Funeral Home in Barrhaven. There will be an afternoon (2-4pm) and evening (7-9pm) visitation at Kelly Funeral Home, 3000 Woodroffe Avenue, on Thursday, July 2, and a Funeral Mass at St. Monica’s Church, 2080 Merivale Road, on Friday, Jul 3, at 11:00 am, Father Champoux officiating.

Those who cannot join us in person may view the funeral service online: @StMonicaChurch on youtube.com. A reception will follow in St. Monica’s Church hall. Inurnment will occur at a later date in St. Patrick’s Fallowfield Cemetery.
