Joy May Kanne, New Waterford Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Joy Kanne on July 14, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in New Waterford on May 3, 1930, Joy was the daughter of the late Jonathan and Gertrude (Daws) Tatlock.

Joy was a devoted, lifelong member of All Saints Anglican Church, where she faithfully served with the A.W.C. Ladies' Guild, the Altar Guild, and participated in many church activities over the years. She especially enjoyed quilting with the guild and lovingly created many beautiful quilts that will be treasured by her family for generations.

She found great joy in reading and gardening. Her immaculate lawn and vibrant flower gardens were admired by all who passed by, and she took pride in growing vegetables to share with her family.

Joy is lovingly remembered by her sons, Brian and Donnie; daughter-in-law, Marilla; her daughter, Cynthia (Rob); her seven cherished grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad), Ann Marie, Michael, Joel, Melissa (Brent), Jordan, and Chelsea; and her four beloved great-grandchildren, Hunter, Jeremy, Logan, and Laurie.

She is also survived by her special nieces, Joy Thornton, Sharon Draycott, and Linda Oliver; her sisters-in-law, Gwen and Betty Tatlock; and by many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbours, and extended family who will miss her dearly.

Joy was true to her name and brought kindness, warmth, and happiness to everyone who knew her.

Besides her parents, Joy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years, Freddy; her sons, David and Gregory; her siblings, Betty, Dorothy, Donald, Derek, Stanley, Norman, John, and her infant sister, Brenda; as well as her dear friends, Jean Porquette, Joan MacKenzie, and Jesse Hillier.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Rev. Tinashe Manatsire officiating. A reception will be held in the funeral home with burial to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Donations in her memory may be made to Calvin United Church, Church of the Good Shepherd, Dominion, or a charity of one's choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
