Mary Catherine “Cathy” Ann Nearing, age 64 of Glace Bay passed away on Thursday, July 16th, 2026 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Victor Leo and Anita (McInnis) Gilmet.

Cathy is survived by her three sons, Wayne McInnis, Victor MacDonald, Milan McInnis, sisters, Karen (George), Laura (Kevin), brothers, Allan (Krystal), Victor and three sisters-in-law, Anna (Herb Nash), Barbara (Terry Ashford), Susan Nearing.

Cathy loved spending time with family and friends, nieces, nephews, she enjoyed gatherings, dancing, listening to music and spending holidays with her family. She adored her dog, Snoopy and two cats, Snowball and Sandy. Cathy loved picking blueberries with her husband Jim and talking to her dear and cherished friend, Blair Slade.

Besides her parents, Cathy was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband James Gerard “Jimmy” Nearing in 2025.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.

A private burial will take place in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wallace Road, Glace Bay.
