It is with great sadness we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Catherine Hynes (nee. Grant), on July 17th, 2026, surrounded by family at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in Sydney, NS to the late Frederick and Jessie (nee. MacKenzie) Grant.

Catherine is survived by her son, Brett (Joanna) of Ontario, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Hynes of Glace Bay. Catherine will be deeply missed by her sister-in-law, Ada Valentine (Scotland); her loving grandchildren; Adam (Marcia), Parker (Dana), Stephanie Mulley (Travis), Katherine, and Robert Hynes; her great-granddaughters, Ellie-Nova Mulley, and Rachel Hynes, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Catherine was predeceased by her loving husband, Gordon Hynes; her son, Grant; her brother Pte. William Grant; and her sister, Vivian Morrison. She was also predeceased by her beloved aunt, Vivian Daye, who raised her from the age of one and held a special place in her heart. Catherine was also predeceased by her lifelong best friend, Myrta Butts.

Catherine was a cherished employee of the Metropolitan for more than 25 years until their closing. She was an extraordinary baker who welcomed everyone into her home with the aroma of fresh made sweets, especially her famous Maid of Honor tarts and Fat Archies. She devoted more than 70 years of service to Saint Mary’s Church and was always someone family, friends, and parishioners could count on for food and baking at gatherings and church functions. An avid animal lover, Catherine opened her home to many furry companions throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.  

The family would like to extend a special thank you to everyone at Victoria Haven, whose kindness and compassion made Catherine’s final years happy, safe, and comfortable. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the extraordinary staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion they provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Catherine’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the SPCA.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, July 23, 2026 from 11:30 am until the time of the funeral service at 1 pm followed by a reception, all in St. Mary's Anglican Church, 8 Marconi Street, Glace Bay. Rev. Tinashe Manatsire officiating. Interment will be held in St. Mary’s Anglican cemetery, Maple Avenue, Glace Bay.
