Obituary of Arthur "Art" Ewart Lynk, Glace Bay

Arthur E. Lynk, 92, long time resident of Birch Street, Glace Bay, and more recently a resident of Taigh Na Mara, died Monday, September 25, 2017 at Glace Bay Hospital following an extended period of illness.

Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Andrew J. and Mamie (Lynk) Lynk. A veteran of the Second World War, he served with the Governor General’s Horse Guard, tank division as a communications specialist and saw action in Italy, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. He was a past executive member and Life Member of John Bernard Croak VC Branch 3 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Following his discharge from the Canadian Army he returned to Glace Bay and in 1947 married Christine Margaret (Chris) MacDonald.

Art and Chris were involved in church camping under the leadership of Deaconess Mable Newsom. They were both founding members of Newsom United Church and over the years were active in the church. Art served at various times as Trustee, Steward, Elder, and Clerk of Session. He was a Sunday School teacher and was active in the Men’s Club. Art was a member of Aberdeen Lodge of the IOOF, Past Noble Grand, and Past District Deputy Grand Master.

He was a 35 year employee of Lynk Electric Limited, a shareholder in the company, a member of the Board of Directors, and Past Chairman of the Board. He preferred the challenge of construction work and was electrical foreman on several large projects throughout Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island.

Art is survived by three children, Linda (Gary Warner), Trout Brook Road; Rev. Eric (Rev. Margaret Collins), Prince Edward Island; Arleen (David Pink), Albert Bridge; 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.  Also surviving are a sister, Elvira (Naish Batten), brothers, Robert “Bob” and Helen; Aubrey “Ace” and Dawn, all of Glace Bay, several nieces and nephews.

Art was predeceased by his wife, Christine “Chris” (MacDonald) Lynk, a brother, Aubrey, in their youth; sister and brother-in-law Marion and Bob Weldon; sister and brother-in-law, Greta and Horace Feldman.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 28, 2-4 and 7-9pm at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Friday, September 29 at 2 p.m. at Newsom United Church, Dominion Street, with Rev. Donald MacDonald and Rev. Laurie MacCuish officiating. Art will be taken to the church at noontime on Friday.

Legion members and veterans will form an honour guard for their comrade at the church. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.  A reception will be held at Newsom Hall following the service of committal.
