It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Melvin “Sonny” Windsor, age 84 of Reserve Mines. Sonny passed away peacefully at the CBRH, Sydney on Tuesday, Feb 13, 2018 surrounded by family.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late William and Charlotte (Fortune) Windsor. He lived his adult life in Reserve Mines.
A coal miner all his life, Sonny was a devout Roman Catholic and a parishioner of St. Josephs Parish, Reserve Mines. His selfless acts were evident in his devotion to his community. In his early years Sonny was active in Minor Baseball, Cubs& Scouts, St. Josephs Men’s Club; serving on the Parish Council and a member of the Lay Carmelite Community. After retirement he devoted his time as parish caretaker for many years. He was a true gentleman who will be sadly missed by those who knew him.
Sonny is survived by his children and grandchildren, daughter, Maureen Windsor (Clements), sons, Mel (Wanda), Larry, John (Helen), Bernie (Valerie), Keith (Lisa), grandchildren, Rick (Amanda), Melissa (Luke), Jeff (Jenna), Nadine, Jennifer, Christopher (Rachelle), Hillary (Mark), great granddaughter, Cordelia, great grandsons, Chase and Cruz and also a sister, Joyce Chiasson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sonny was predeceased by his loving wife, Alice (Ryan) Windsor, his brother, Robert and his sister, Dorothy Mackie.
Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Thursday, Feb 15, 2018 at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 am on Friday in St. Joseph’s Church with Father Dan Boudreau officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery followed by a reception in the church hall.
