Obituary of James Bernard 'Jimmy' Petrie, New Waterford

It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of James Bernard 'Jimmy' Petrie, 47, on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at home.

Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Robert and Theresa (McPhee) Petrie.

Jimmy loved hunting and fishing and would go at any opportunity. He had many interests and employment positions over the years starting early on at Dave's Pet Store in the Mayflower Mall. While employed there, Jimmy showed his true love of animals to all the patrons and this passion would carry over into his own home where he had several Yorkshire Terriers and other pets. He then went on to work as a Meatcutter at Sobeys in New Waterford where he met his loving wife, Lillian, of 27 years. Following this, he was employed as a Personal Care Worker (PCW) at a private facility and then MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney for a total of tens years before retiring. Lastly, Jimmy opened his own business, Olliewood Skate Shop, on Plummer Avenue where he connected with several of the youth in town. Above all else, Jimmy loved his wife and children. He will be sorely missed.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian (MacLeod); daughters, Caitlyn Petrie (Joseph Pelly), New Waterford, Makayla Petrie, at home; son, Matthew Petrie, Sydney; sisters Terry (Roddie) Mitchell, Jean Christie, Agnes (Lorne) Fredericksen; brother, Billy (Linda) Petrie; grandson, Leland Boutilier.

Besides his parents, Jimmy was predeceased by a brother, Freddy Christie.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Monday, May 14 from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A Funeral Mass of celebration will take place Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Ray Huntley officiating.
