Obituary of Anne Mae MacGibbon, New Waterford

With great sadness, the family of Anne M. MacGibbon announce her passing on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.  Mom’s passing occurred on the anniversary of her beloved son, Irving who passed away tragically at the age of five.  

Anne was born May 9, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Michael and Cecilia (Murphy) McInnis of North Sydney.

Mom graduated from New Waterford General Hospital (1950) with Highest Honors and was employed at New Waterford General and New Waterford Consolidated hospitals for over 40 years. She worked in many areas of nursing including the Operating Room, Nursing Supervisor, Inhalation Therapy, and the Medical Unit (as Head Nurse). Mom demonstrated great professionalism and dedication in her Nursing career ensuring that her patients always received quality, compassionate care. As a Nurse Leader, Mom mentored many novice and seasoned nurses. She cared immensely for others and her kindness and generosity was evident in all aspects of her life.  

Playing bridge 3 nights a week was mom’s greatest passion in her later years. She met many people who became her friends and bridge partners. She was a member of St. Leonard’s CWL, Eucharistic Ministers, and also held various positions with the Aging Gracefully group of which she was a founding member.

She leaves behind to mourn her 5 children of whom she was extremely proud - Wendell, Debbie (Bernie), Jerry (Theresa), Ken (Judy) and Eileen. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Andrew, Kiel, Lauren, Brennan, Robert, Michelle, Scott, Megan, and Anna. She is also great-grandmother to 16 great-grandchildren. Isabel (Romeo) St. Pierre is her only surviving sibling.

Besides her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband David, her son Irving, and brothers, Dodie, Jackie, Jerry and by sisters Margaret, Eileen, Evelyn, and Helen.

Many thanks to all who cared for mom in her later years especially NW Home Care and her private care team, (Bev, Diane, Lillian, Linda).   Special thanks to Dr. Jennifer Lange and the superb and compassionate care provided by the 2nd floor Care Team at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. There will be no visitation. A funeral Mass will be held at, The Parish St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford on Monday, August 28 at 11 am. with Fr. Godwin Obeki officiating. Burial in the family plot at Union Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Leonard’s Parish or a charity of one’s choice.
