Obituary of Mary Anne Burke

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our loving sister, Mary Anne Burke, age 85. Mary peacefully passed away with her loving family by her side, April 16, 2016, at New Waterford Heights, New Waterford. Born in Glace Bay, Mary was the daughter of the late John and Mabel `Lovey’ (MacLean) and was a long-time resident of Rebecca Street. She was a very religious person and was a faithful member of Holy Cross Church. Mary was a quiet, generous, but busy lady all of her life. She was like a second mother to all of her younger siblings’, nieces and nephews; she never missed a birthday, Christmas, or any other event in our lives. In her younger years she enjoyed traveling Canada and camping in Mira. Mary worked 44 years at the Glace Bay General Hospital and the new Glace Bay Hospital as a seamstress, where she was respected by her coworkers who all enjoyed working with her. She was also very involved in crafts for many years, making tole paintings and ceramics for everyone. Mary will be sadly missed by brothers John (Sharlene), Wendover Ont., Jim (Janet), Glace Bay; sisters Georgina (Calder ) MacDonald, Glace Bay, Andrea Nandlal, Pickering, Ont.; sisters in-law Josephine Burke, Toronto, Ont. and Debbie Burke, Glace Bay; many nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Gary (Bim), Glace Bay. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by brothers Daniel `Dodie’, William `Willie’, Donald `Donnie’; sister Teresa; and in infancy babies John and Jim. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass presided by Fr. Norman MacPhee will be celebrated 11am., Wednesday April 20, 2016 at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Interment will be at a later date in the Parish Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Holy Cross Memorial Fund, or a charity of one’s choice. At this time, we would like to sincerely thank Dr. Gallivan, the staffs of 3rd South and the 4thFloor of the Glace Bay Hospital and the 3rd floor at the New Waterford Hospital for the excellent care and compassion given to Mary.
