Obituary of Frederick Morrison Campbell

It is with great sadness and love of our Dad, that we announce the passing of a wonderful and sincere man; a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother in-law, uncle and friend. Fred, age 93, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Sunday, March 6, 2016, in the Palliative Care unit of the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Malcolm and Florence (Gertsch) Campbell. He was a member of the former St. Anthony’s Church, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Fred was a long time employee of Devco, working in #11, 1B and retired from #26, in 1977. He was a true outdoorsman, he loved the sport of fly fishing, and he was a licensed guide on the Margaree River for sport fisherman; he will be remembered and missed by many of them throughout North America. He also enjoyed tying flies, hunting and his times spent as a coach for minor hockey and as a leader with Scouts Canada. He loved hockey, and to say he was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan would be a great under statement. Fred also enjoyed his conversations with all of his friends and family, regarding his life stories of times fishing, hunting and about sports, especially his Maple Leafs. But his fondest conversations were always with or about his best and closest friend Wayne Boland. Frederick is survived by his loving family; daughters Linda (Kenny) Kennedy, Glace Bay; Heather (Terry) MacMullin, Beaverbank, NS; Gail Courtney, Paradise, NFLD; Janice (Freddie) Mitchell, Glace Bay, with whom he resided the past four years; sons Frederick (Ramona), Glace Bay; Barry (Karen), Calgary, AB; Derrill (Anita), Reserve Mines; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister in-law Kay Hannigan, New Waterford; nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Henrietta (Doyle); grandsons Frederick Robert Courtney, and Frederick Michael Mitchell in infancy; brother George; sister Violet "Puggie" MacDonald and son in-law Henry Courtney. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 10th, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee will be celebrated 11 am Friday in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at a later date in St. Anthony’s ParishCemetery, Glace Bay. Memorial donations in Dad’s memory may be made to Palliative Care Unit at the Glace BayHospital.
