Obituary of John James Yates, Glace Bay
It is with broken hearts that we, the family of John "Jim" James Yates, 81, announce his passing peacefully at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay with his family by his side on Saturday, September 29th, 2018.
Born in Glace Bay on September 26th, 1937, he was the son of the late Ellen & John Yates.
John is survived by his loving wife, Laura (O'Donnell) Yates; daughters, Robyn (Ronnie) Melnick, Diane O'Donnell and Marcella Gruen (Alberta).
Also surviving are his four grandchildren, Greg (Nicole) Simmons, (British Columbia), Brendan (Jennifer) Simmons (Alberta), Mandy (Dean) George (Alberta) and his pride and joy Haley Melnick, four great grandchildren, Katilyn, Rachel, Caleb (Alberta) and Greyson (British Columbia).
He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy (the late Vince) Turner and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
John was predeceased by his sister, Josephine O'Neil.
John had many jobs over the years with Highland Fisheries and worked in various coal mines, ending with his retirement from Prince Mine. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
I would like to extend a thank you to the Doctors, EHS, Glace Bay General Hospital and the amazing staff at Victoria Haven for the care they provided for John over the years.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m., all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Rev. Ruby Carter officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Victoria Haven Nursing Home.
