Port Morien / Glace Bay

It is with utmost sadness I share the sudden loss of my husband and soul mate, Douglas James Shepard, age 74 on Tuesday, March 5th, 2019 at his home in Glace Bay.

Born in Long Beach, Port Morien, NS, Doug was the son of the late Ira Wellsford   and Mary Margaret (O’Day) Shepard Sr.

He spent 36 years serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring in 1996. His greatest hobbies were music and woodworking.

He leaves to mourn, his wife Fay (Griffiths) Shepard, siblings, Anita (Barry) MacDonald, Annette (Duncan) Martell, Paul (Joan), Martin (Joanne), Llewellyn, Ken (Roberta), Velma Boutilier, Madeline Hall and his sister in law, Charmaine Shepard (Ira Jr.- deceased).

Doug is also survived by his special brother and best friend, Dennis MacPherson, his in laws who were like a second family, mother in law, Phyllis (Bill) Adkins, sisters in law, Kathy (Howard) Wilkie, Christine Griffiths, Carol Griffiths, brother in law,  Lorne Griffiths and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his two brothers, Ira Shepard Jr. and Irvin “Brucie” Shepard and his father in law, Jim Griffiths.

I would like to thank Glace Bay First Responders who did everything humanly possible, Father Duaine Devereaux and friend Robert Davies who shared their compassion and support.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.

A funeral mass will be held at a later date in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Memorial donations in memory of Doug may be made to your local St. Vincent DePaul Society or a charity of your choice.
