Wilfred is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Agnes (MacNeil); sons, Wilfred Jr. (Phyllis) and Raymond; sister, Dorothy (Tom) Ling; brother, Hughie; grandchildren, Daniel (Ellie), Raymond Jr. (Nicole), Peter (Jenna), Nathan (Kari), Brittany (Jay), Katelynn (Mitch), Adam; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, Ryan (Tessa) and Brennan (Jolene).
Besides his parents, Wilfred was predeceased by brothers, Donnie, Raymond and twins at birth; sisters, Emiline (the late Rod MacNeil) and Annie; daughters-in-law, Debi and Diane and infant granddaughter, Melissa; mother and father-in-law, Martha and Peter MacNeil.
Wilfred was a hard working miner starting at No.12 Colliery at a young age and then Lingan Colliery until his retirement. He was active in the Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree Knight and was also an alter server and Eucharistic Minister in the Parish Church of St. Leonard. He had a passion for mechanical work in his younger years working on his vehicles and helping out his neighbours. He also enjoyed his time in Ben Eoin Campground with family and friends, music and song. He was a strong, quiet family man full of Christian values who lived a full productive life up to his last week before his illness. He was a friend to all who knew him and will be truly missed.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Members of the Knights of Columbus will assemble for a prayer service on Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. A Funeral Mass of Celebration will take place Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
A thank you to the staff of New Waterford Consolidated and Cape Breton Regional Hospitals for their excellent care and compassion shown towards Wilfred during his illness. It is greatly appreciated.
